The Cochin varieties date back to the 1870's. Black Cochins have fluffy, downy plumage giving them a somewhat massive, bulky appearance. They are a beautiful coal-black color. They are highly prized for exhibition.

Customer Product Reviews
With a minimum order of 25 (plus one free) chicks, I allowed my two children to each pick 12 chicks. We got several Polish colorations, some blue, anconas, etc. The one spare I managed to convince my son to select a black cochin. When the chicks came in, all were adorable and alert. The little cochin looks like a tiny fluffy penguin, I was certain I could steal her for my own, alas..... she's so sweet and adorable the kids are fighting over her. We will be back to order more of this sweet and beautiful breed. She's very mellow and loves to be handled.
Never had a Cochin till about 5 years ago when we ordered a straight run of 50 chicks. One Cochin chick was in the mix and my son "called" it. My son named him Harry but as the chick grew it became clear the name had to change to Harriet. She was the most docile hen, and oddly enough my son trained her to sit and stay. She was a very smart hen. He took her everywhere, and just in case some other little boy around 5 wants to know, chickens do not like trampolines! He is older and wiser. We just received an order where we had to be sure we had some Cochin hens. It was so exciting to see them arrive peeping and ready for sugar water and a meal. Thanks again!
I just want to let you know how great my black cochins are. They are all very tame and will eat right out of my hand. Some times they like to fly up on my head and back when I am feeding them or when I go out to their pen just to watch them. Thanks for the second bunch of great chickens, I will be ordering from you again this year.
