I'm going to start reaising Road Island Reds form chicks that I have ordered from Murry McMurry's, I would like to know if anyone knows how well chickens thrive in Texas?

I am raising 13 different laying breeds to try out this heat in Texas (I live 25 miles south of Austin). I think your RIRs will do fine. Our winter (unless, you live in the Panhandle) are really not stressful, except with the occasional CHILL we can sometime get. I have lost a couple of laying this past year to the heat but none to the cold! I hope the best for you....I think you are starting with a hardy breed!

I live in Amarillo and have raised RIR on 2 different occasions and had good luck with them. We have very hot dry summers and very cold winters.
