The Speckled Sussex was developed in Sussex County, England over 100 years ago. It was famous there as a table fowl with pinkish white skin and long, deep body ideal for fattening. It is of medium size, in the heavy breed class, a layer of light brown or tinted eggs, and the hens will set. Its plumage color is a delight to the eye being of rich mahogany base color with individual feathers ending in a white tip separated from the rest of the feathers by a black bar. Baby chicks vary greatly in color from a creamy buff to dark chestnut and some also have alternate dark and light stripes lengthwise on the back. This variety combines beauty with utility, and is very nice to raise for showing.
As a reminder, to help ensure a safe arrival to you, the minimum number of chicks for each order prior to April 1st is 25.
On and after April 1st, the minimum number of chicks required is 15. You can mix and match any type of baby chick in your order to reach the applicable chick minimum order. If ordering any bantams, we require a minimum of 15 bantams per order.

Customer Product Reviews
The speckled Sussexs are great birds. They are very friendly. Also , they are still laying eggs
in 15 degree weather and enjoying the snow.
This spring we received 5 Speckled Sussex hens. They are BY FAR my favorite breed out of the 20+ breeds that we have. They are so loving and outgoing. Their names are Snickers, Tootsie, Hershey, Nestle, and Baby Ruth. Thank you McMurray Hatchery!
Our Speckled Sussex chickens are great! When I ordered them I was looking for calm, friendly birds, and they have turned out to be just that. I love their spots! So beautiful!
Good, dependable layers; also very calm, with a GREAT "chickenality!" (personality). These beautiful hens make a VERY good pet chicken, too, due to their people-oriented nature. We have some that follow us -- and our neighbors -- everywhere, singing and talking to us all the while. So sweet ! We love them !

"Peggy & Sally" are by far my absolute favorites out of 60+ chickens. When I come out to see them, they are always the first ones to the door... they follow me in the pastures, garden, even quite a ways from all the other girls! Sweet, personable, and so friendly, you can't get a nicer breed....wonderful medium size eggs too!
My Sussex, Maple, is so pretty.
I love her soft plumage.
She will be laying soon and I cannot wait!
Such a good breed to get!

These baby chickens are AMAZING. I can't wait to show them at the fair next year. They are so beautiful and healthy as can be. Their personality is so fun and the coloring is spot on. Thank you so much!!
We loved these from the moment we picked the box up at the post office. They were so healthy and active, and soon were running all over the brooder. They have grown into beautiful birds that forage all day. While they are busy birds, they are not aggressive or jumpy. You cannot go wrong with this breed.
We ordered 2 Speckled Sussex hens in our order of 25 total chicks that we received last May. So they are now 7 1/2 months old. They are beautiful, sweet, and friendly. We purposely picked breeds that generally had a gentle temperament. We wanted to be able to handle them easily and we wanted them to get along with each other well. It worked. We love our whole flock, but these two are by far the most friendly. They love attention - and we love to give it to them!
The Speckled Sussex is a very cute and friendly breed. I have one. Her name is "Trouble". She is very freindly!
I order my first chicks this spring. I received four sussex, along with three other breeds, and they are by far my favorite! One in particular has been friendly since I got her. When she was just two weeks old she would hop to the edge of her brooder to jump out and roost on my finger. She is still the friendliest of my hens and will follow me around the run and has no problem being handled.
I have three speckled sussex. Two roosters and one hen. All three get along wonderfully. My boys get along just fine. I have never had any troubles with them fighting. I would definately recommend this breed to anyone.
The speckled sussex that we ordered are a real joy to be around. They are so friendly and will hop up onto our backs when we are doing "chicken Chores." Very pretty and interesting birds. Thanks to our experiences with McMurray Hatchery, chickens have replaced horses as our favorite farm animals around here.
Dear McMurray Hatchery,
I am 11 years old. Two years ago,
I ordered 30 chicks, including 5
Speckled Sussex. These hens have now become my favorite breed! They are intelligent, beautiful, bursting with personality, and the friendliest chickens I have ever had the pleasure of meeting!
Also, they lay fantastic eggs. I advise all buyers of McMurray chicks to include some of these superior poultry in their order.

I am very happy with my 2 year old birds I bought from McMurray. They are great layers of medium sized eggs. I can't get over how friendly they are even with two roosters. My 15 month old son can follow them around without fear of their reaction.
My first order of chicks from you (Speckled Sussex) arrived three weeks ago, and all are still active, healthy, and growing like crazy. Great product. The free exotic (a Polish) has become my kids' favorite (they're rapidly turning her into a pet). Thanks, I'll be back....
My Speckled Sussex rooster is now 2 & half years old. And the beauty of this breed truely does get better with age. The feed to meat/egg conversion is excellent and the plumage is superb for avoiding predators. This is truely an ideal chicken for the homestead.
I love my Speckled Sussex I received from Murray McMurray in June 03! This is my first try at keeping chickens and these are my favorite out of a variety I picked. They are friendly, curious, beautiful, and great foragers. (I even like the rooster I ended up with.) I would definitely order more of them.
My Speckled Sussex arrived on April 2nd, 2001, four among a larger order of other breeds. They are stunning in their coloration and do not stand out in advertisement for hawks. I am an aviculturist and feel that these chickens are a treat. The rooster is an excellent lawn supervisor, protecting what is his without being aggressive and the girls lay beautiful large brown eggs. They are also a most terrific pet: they like being handled and will walk up and knock on the back door for entry to the house!Carolyn WashkoThornhurst, PA
