Barnevelder
The Barnevelder is one of the newest large, heavy breeds to land at McMurray Hatchery. Hailing from Holland, this Dutch breed was developed around 200 years ago and is known for its hardiness and egg laying. Barnevelder hens are stunning and are highly sought after by backyard chicken keepers. Known for their rich black double-lacing over reddish-brown feathering, black head and neck feathering with a green sheen, orange eyes, and bright red single comb and wattles.
Barnevelder hens are considered good, consistent brown egg layers, however they are slow to mature and can take longer to reach laying than other breeds. As a slow-maturing breed, it can take some time for their feather pattern to develop.
Barnevelders are known for their quiet and gentle yet independent temperament. They are content in a small backyard flock but thrive when allowed to forage, even in a small garden.
