Ameraucana

The Ameraucana is a highly popular breed, known for their beautiful blue eggs.

The Ameraucana breed was originally developed in the 1970s, derived from Araucanas. Ameraucanas were bred to retain the blue-egg laying gene but eliminate some of the issues associated with the Araucana breed.

We have been breeding Ameraucanas since the 1980s — even before they were admitted into the Standard of Perfection by the American Poultry Association in 1984.

Mature Ameraucanas are medium-sized birds with pea combs, are extremely hardy, and come in a wonderful combination of colors and color patterns making a beautiful laying flock. Baby chicks come in all colors, just like the adults.

Our Ameraucanas are sold as a mixed flock only, and specific feather coloring is not available. Our birds have muffs, but not all will have beards.

How blue with their eggs be?
The color blue in eggs can range from a nice pale blue to some that are fairly light. It can also range in hue from a blue, to a blue-green. Color will vary from hen to hen, and eggs from a flock of Ameraucanas can show variations in hues. Despite our best efforts, even after 50 years our hens will still throw the occasional off-colored egg.

Are these “Easter Eggers”? Or breed true Ameraucana.
Our Ameraucanas are a true breed. Our line was established in the 1970's. This flock is not a hybrid or a cross. Our flock is selected for egg color, but it is not divided by feather color or pattern. Our birds will have muffs, but not all will have beards.

Our main flock of Ameraucanas is bred for a standard egg color and egg production. Our Ameraucanas are not divided by specific feather color or patterns, so chicks from this breed will display a variety of colors and patterns.
