Ginger Broiler
Our new Ginger Broiler meat bird variety is built like a Cornish Cross, but without the issues of a fast-growing breed. The Ginger Broilers are a heavy-to-medium growth bird, and are natural foragers, very active and ascites resistant. With essentially no leg problems — and high-altitude tolerant — this easy to raise breed is a winner. They will vary from nearly white to dark ginger-colored, and dress out very nicely. The Ginger Broilers will range from nearly white to dark ginger-colored birds. Because they don't have the livability issues, they can also be kept longer and processed later or as needed.
"The Ginger Broilers were a good meat breed of chicken that grew to full size about 4-5 weeks longer than the Cornish Cross. We butchered all ten of ours (all 10 made it to processing) at about 13 weeks. The cockerels were around 5-6 pounds each and the pullets were around 3-4 pounds processed.
We fed them a meatmaker feed the entire time with the meat chickens. They were a very active breed that followed us around in the yard when we went in to visit them. This is my favorite choice for a meat chicken breed because of their growth rate combined with how active they are, and how friendly they are."
