Russian Orloff
The rare Russian Orloff is new to McMurray Hatchery. This easy-going breed fits well in a variety of flocks. Orloffs will bear confinement and be content in a small backyard flock, but they also enjoy the opportunity to free-range on larger properties such as homesteads and hobby farms. The Orloff’s calm nature makes it a great choice for all types of chicken tenders.
The Russian Orloff is an exotic breed believed to have originated in Persia, but then brought to Russia and developed by Count Alexi Orloff in the 19th century. The Orloff was originally included in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection from 1875-1894, but is currently not recognized. They are listed as threatened on The Livestock Conservancy’s Priority List.
Though there are several color varieties, we carry the Spangled which is the most common in the United States today. Spangled Orloffs are one of the most popular colorations within the breed. Roosters are a deep reddish brown with black and white spotting on the breast and abdomen. Hens are generally a touch lighter with larger white spots. They have a distinct v-shaped white tipped black spangle pattern throughout their stunning plumage. The Orloff’s beautiful coloring is offset by clean yellow legs and amber eyes.
With their beards, muffs, thickly feathered necks, and tight cushion combs, these birds are known for extreme cold hardiness. They have an exceptional ability to thrive in harsh climates that are considered taxing on other breeds. Hens are average layers of light brown eggs and are not generally prone to broodiness. However, Orloffs do grow out to a decent size for a table bird, and are therefore a viable option for farmers and homesteaders that want to raise a sustainable dual-purpose flock, especially in harsh, cold climates.
