The Barred Rock is one of the all time popular favorites in this country. Developed in New England in the early 1800's by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas, it has spread to every part of the U.S. and is an ideal American chicken. Prolific layers of brown eggs, the hens are not discouraged by cold weather. Their solid plumpness and yellow skin make a beautiful heavy roasting fowl. Our strain has the narrow, clean barring so desirable in appearance. Their bodies are long, broad, and deep with bred-in strength and vitality. These chickens are often called Plymouth Rocks, but this title correctly belongs to the entire breed, not just the Barred variety. Whatever you call them, you can't beat them for steady, reliable chickens. Baby chicks are dark gray to black with some white patches on head and body.
My neighbor and I are placing an order together. Will there be a way to distinguish her Barred Rocks from my Black Australorps?

I have barred rock chickens and they are the production breed. My chickens have pale legs and beaks and not bright yellow. Does your barred rock chicks have bright yellow legs and break? If so, do you have pictures?
Our Barred Rocks are a Production Breed. They do have yellow legs and yellow beak, however the brightness will vary.
Hens LayingOur hens started laying at 20 weeks, they were the first to start laying in our mixed flock. And they are laying every day with one day off every few days. Awesome production! And the eggs taste wonderful. We did find that fake eggs helped them figure out where to lay and they will only lay in the boxes with fake eggs! Very happy with my rock barred girls!
Not Happy with Barred Rock ChickensI received my order of chicks on Aug. 10th of last year they were healthy, but now they are in their second ladder of eggs. The hens and eggs are to small to be barred rocks. I wanted to give the hens a chance to prove to me that they are barred rocks before I voice my disappointment.
