This has always been one of our favorite varieties because it was about the first one raised by Murray McMurray. In 1917, the first time he made an exhibit at the Iowa State Fair, he won a blue ribbon on his prize Black Minorca cockerel, and it gave him a thrill he never got over. The Minorcas are the largest of the Mediterranean Class and the Blacks are perhaps the finest examples of their class. They lay large white eggs, are non-setters.

Black Minorcas - Ratings and Reviews
They are growing on meUpdate 02.14.16 I just wanted to give readers an update on the egg laying ability. My hens started laying at 23 weeks, the pullet eggs are small as usual, but bright white and very well shaped for just starting to lay. They are also laying every other day which is quite impressive for being so young and just starting out. Yes the birds are more flighty than the rest of my flock, but they will allow you to pick them up and they are very calm once being held. They are really stunning with the green highlights weaved in there black feathers. Another thing that impresses me is the softness of their feathers, almost a silky feel to them. These are really some beautiful birds!
I originally had ordered 12 Leghorns along with my Black starts..... I checked the box that substitution was ok, my thought would be if they were one or two short of what I ordered I would get the qty made up with a little variety in the order. When my order shipped I was upset to learn that ALL of my Leghorns had been substitued with Black Minorcas - 12 birds. After I got over my initial shock of wanting white birds, heavy layers of white ex lg eggs to go with my black and red sexlinks..... I must admit these little chicks are really adorable! After reading many reviews and their production I would like to say "Thank you" for the substitution! I am sure I will be well pleased for many years to come. The only problem I have is now I need a rooster for them as I want to keep their bloodline pure lol.
wildwe got 4 of them and they are the wildest birds we have ever gotten. will not order these again.
