Juvenile California Valley Quail
The California Valley Quail (Callipepla californica) is the state bird of California, and prized for it's hardiness and adaptability. These small, plump quail are known for their unique drooping black crest on their head.
The California Quail closely resemble the Gambel Quail. The California Valley Quail has a dark face sharply outlined in white and a rich brown crown, scaled black and white belly with a chestnut patch, and fine black and white markings on its neck. Females are brownish gray and are more muted as they don't have the same strong head markings as the males.
California Valley Quail are sociable little gamebirds that gather in small flocks named coveys. Similar to Gambel Quail, California Valley Quail spend most of their time on the ground and under shrubs or other cover.
