Juvenile Gambel Quail
Gambel Quail — also called Gambel's Quail — are beautiful little wildbirds natively found in the desert southwest. While the Gambel Quail is similar in appearance to the California Quail, the Gambel has a brighter reddish-brown crown and a buff belly.
Gambel Quail have a distinct a teardrop shaped, forward-facing crest. Both male and females have gray backs, buff belly and chestnut sides, however the females lack the males black belly coloring. In the summer, flocks or coveys can have up to 16 or so offspring.
Gambel Quail usually move along the ground in groups, or 'coveys', and they tend to forage on the ground or under shrubs or other covering.
