Juvenile Blue Scaled Quail
Blue Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) — also called Texas Blue Scaled Quail, Scaled Quail, Blue Quail, or Cotton-top Quail — is native to Texas, New Mexico, the desert Southwest United States, and Mexico. The Blue Scaled Quail gets its name from it's scale-looking feather pattern. These small blue-gray birds are sometimes referred to as "cotton-tops" because of the white tips on their upright crests.
Like the Gambel and California Valley quail, Blue Scale are active and skittish and prefer a dry habitat with some covered areas such as grasses, brush, or bushes.
See our FAQ for more information on states with restrictions on quail. We recommend checking with your state wildlife or regulatory agency before placing an order for gamebirds.
