Black Bellied Whistling Tree Duck
The Black Bellied Tree duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis), is also known as the Black Bellied Whistling Duck. This is one of only a few "whistling ducks" native to North America and has also been referred to as the "Mexican squealer". Once seen only in the southernmost United States, Mexico, and tropical Central to south-central South America, it can be now be found year-round in much of the United States.
Black Bellied Whistling Tree Ducks are medium-sized ducks averaging around 2 pounds. They are light cinnamon in color around the chest and lower neck with a distinct black belly. The sides of their heads are ashy gray. Their bills are bright pink, and they have long pinkish legs. They are mainly non-migratory, although they are listed on the List of Birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).
